What We Did

#LifeUnfiltered is a film project involving 18 young people, supported by voluntary sector organisations, the local NHS, councils, schools and Bournemouth University. The brief was to look at mental health through the eyes of a young person living in Dorset and create a piece of work, to be shown in schools, that raises mental health awareness for young people.  The young people have led this project, from initial concept through to planning, filming, social media promotion and launching the film on World Mental Health Day, 10th October 2017.

This group of 18 young people from Bournemouth & Poole, aged 13-20 years, have been working on a project over the last 6 months. The brief was to look at mental health through the eyes of a young person living in Dorset, to create a final piece of work that raises mental health awareness for young people.

From an initial workshop in May 2017 to discuss young people’s thoughts and experiences of mental health, the group have designed and planned the project themselves. They wanted the project to reach as many children and young people as possible so a film was designed to be visually engaging, short enough to be viewed on social media and accessible to a cross section of age groups. The young people developed their ideas into an outline for the film and interviewed film companies who were invited to bid for the project. Together with the successful film company, LoveLove Films, the group have been involved in all aspects of filming, design, animation, editing and promotion for the launch event.

The group’s film #LifeUnfiltered is being launched on World Mental Health Day, 10th October 2017: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lifeunfiltered-tickets-38003725165
This project has been supported by Bournemouth University, Poole Youth Workers, Dorset Mental Health Forum, Dorset Mind, Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust and Healthwatch Dorset.

Outcomes

This project has been a really successful piece of joint work, involving a diverse group of young people supported by health, councils, education and the voluntary sector. All the participants are keen to see the film reach a wide audience and promotion plans over the next few months include local and national press coverage, social media promotion, screening in schools, colleges, universities, local councils and at local and regional conferences. The young people are planning blogs and vlogs about their involvement in the project to ensure that it reaches as many young people as possible.

Is there any other information you would like to add?

The young people involved in this project didn’t know each other at the start, so they’ve learnt to listen and support each other through some challenging conversations. They’ve shown great commitment to the film and their enthusiasm has carried this project. It would be great to celebrate all their hard work and promote the film #LifeUnfiltered further with this award.
